Writing Prompt #3
I know, I know. I missed Writing Prompt Wednesday. I've been busy getting ready for an Arts and Crafts show on Saturday. I also knew that there was 70% chance of rain today. If you want to see the blog post for my Overthinker Creates account just look to your left for the link. It should read Etsy Shop Blog.

And now... The Prompt
_____
A green
glow could be seen in the cave. Curious,
they entered. They never expected that
the cave was emitting the glow in an attempt to pull the unsuspecting into its
grasp.
Within
moments of entering the cave, they started to notice that the glow was
beginning to fade in bits and pieces until all that was left was a trail of
lights leading deeper and deeper into the cave.
The lights behind them had faded away, waiting to reappear as soon as
another hiker had gotten too close.
The light
ahead of them began to flicker with impatience one of the girls noticed. “Come on,” she stated, pulling at her best
friend’s hand. “It wants us to follow
the lights.”
“How can
you tell?” the other girl asked, huddling next to her boyfriend and ignoring
her friend’s insist tugs.
The boy,
Alexander, grumbled. He hadn’t wanted to
go in this hiking trip to begin with. He
would rather still be in bed, curled around his girlfriend’s sleeping body, as
the sun rose higher in the sky. He never
understood Natalie and Carrie’s insistence at going outdoors.
“The lights
are flickering at us,” Carrie answered them.
“The light behind us is gone and there is no possible way that we can
move anything but forward. Let’s go,”
she demanded, letting her impatience color her tone.
Natalie
without Alexander – never Alex – was one thing.
Natalie with Alexander was an insecure mass of indecision and
insecurity. She could be easily swayed
and Carrie decided to use Alexander’s silence to her benefit.
“Come on,”
she insisted to the couple. “The creepy
crawlies and carnivorous beasts are more likely to find it if we keep standing
still.”
Alexander groaned
but started leading Natalie forward. He
knew that Carrie would be a good person to have around if snakes and spiders started
appearing.
The cave’s
glowing lights kept flickering.
Eventually they disappeared entirely when the group of three passed
them. Urging them forward, the cave
carefully judged them with each minute that passed.
Carrie is a leader, it decided as the
girl lead the group into the cave.
Occasionally it felt her small hands touching the walls as if trying to
figure out where the glow was coming from.
It wondered if she would understand that the rocks themselves contained
the necessary elements to light up from the inside.
It watched
as Natalie, this girl has more inner strength
than she’s revealing, clung to the muscular weakling beside her. She’d
do well without him. Then the cave
went to wondering how best to separate the group.
I’ll let THEM decide, it finally
determined.
Finally the
glowing rocks faded to black, revealing the light at the end of the tunnel. “There’s light right ahead,” Carrie
needlessly pointed out. “Hurry up.”
Scrambling
ahead of her best friend, she allowed them to get separated. It wasn’t as if they could get lost at this
point. Emerging from the cave, Carrie
looked around her as she began to hear a rumble behind her.
“Welcome,
Mistress,” a soft voice sounded nearby. “The
Cave has determined that you are worthy.
Your friends, however, still have to pass their own tests before they
can rejoin you.
