Book Review - Adorkable - Cookie O'Gorman

Something about this book caught my attention.

The adorable cover?  The unique title?  The book blurb?

All three.

The trio promises a quirky ride through one senior's brain.

Sally Spitz (unfortunate name that) is unlucky enough to have a boy crazy best friend determined to help her find Mr. or - in the opening set up's case - Ms. Right.

It doesn't help that her own mother is willing to help out Hooker (poor best friend with another unfortunate last name).

This didn’t actually make sense to me.  We learn early on that Sally's mother divorced Sally's father because he was cheating on her.  Would she be so willing to set up her daughter repeatedly while the girl is in high school?  I doubt it.  It's more likely she'd be content to let her daughter not date or find her own boyfriends.  Especially since she hasn't moved on and started dating again herself...  Maybe if Sally was 30-years old...

But this is one of those things we have to suspend our sense of disbelief in.  If everything was realistic we'd have no Princess Diaries or ordinary girl meets prince stories.

Even a few parts of my own plots would need drastic revisions if part of the young adult story world didn't live on youthful daydreams.

Anyway... Sally however does have a best friend called Becks. - No, that's not is real name. -   She has liked Becks ever since the moment she's met him in grade school, but has never said a word.  It doesn't help that he's seeing a different girl every other week.

Fed up with the match making and fueled by a rumor started by someone misunderstanding a situation, Sally convinces Becks to pretend to be her boyfriend for a month.   All it takes is a month of Calculus homework and some kissing lessons...

I enjoyed this story despite the problems.

The poor unfortunate names. (I mentally sung that to the tune of the Little Mermaid song - Poor Unfortunate Souls - or whatever it's called.

The aforementioned Hooker and Mother matchmaking schemes.

And I couldn't tell when the story took place.  Beginning of the year? End of the year?  Becks playing soccer didn't help because here in West Tennessee boys soccer is played in the spring and the map tells me that Tennessee is right next to North Carolina.  College acceptance letters are middle of the year. Spring Sports signings are April/May.  But there were several beginning of the year references too.

Would I recommend it? As long as you can suspend you reasonable belief and just go along with the story.  I did enjoy it despite the already stated issues.  Give it a try. I'll be waiting to see what else Cookie O'Gorman brings to her booklist.
