Book Review - The Girl Without Magic - Megan O'Russell

The funny thing about reading something from somebody you sorta-kinda know (I went to high school with Megan O'Russell's husband, but I have not met this fearless author, yet.) is that there are tiny moments in books where you catch reality sneaking into fiction.

And it is amazing!  Like Chapters 11 through   where I can see details and dialogue inspired by real life adventures (and possibly conversations/thoughts).

And yes, authors will pull inspiration from their lives from little or major conversations.  In this case, inspiration from her travels.

The Girl Without Magic  (The Chronicles of Maggie Trent - Book One) released at the perfect moment.  So many books that I've put my hands on (or downloaded) lately have had fairy tale orgins.  Obvious fairy tale origins.

I am so sick of obvious fairy tales reimaginings, and sadly they seem popular lately and most likely won't be leaving my TBR pile any time soon.  This piece of young adult paranormal fantasy is a breath of fresh air.

Even better, it is currently a Kindle Unlimited read!

While the story has origins in a previously released, but no longer available, series it is part a standalone series.

So, yes, I have been breaking my 'don't recommend a book but recommend the entire series' rule.  But some rules are meant to be broken.  Sometimes.

And I do recommend this story.

Maggie Trent is not your average heroine.  She is flawed.  She is insecure.  She has those self-doubting conversations we all have in the back of our minds.

But she's also smart.  She quickly picks up ways to earn magic - the currency of choice in the Siren's Realm - without draining her own internal reserves.

She's fearless.  Maggie ventures into the unknown with Bertrand because she knows he can help her, even if she distrusts him.

Maggie Trent is also human (insomuch as  witch can be human).  She works hard.  She has fears. Struggles.  Complaints.  She lusts.  Doubts.  She makes mistakes and finds her own way.

If you are tired of that perfect heroine with no flaws, then I have a tale for you.

It all starts when Maggie falls through a tiny tear through time and space before landing in The Siren's Realm - where pleasure and destruction are dispensed at the whelms of the Siren.

Happy Reading,
